Putting
the pieces together
Organizing
the information you have available for your site will help define
the pages as well as provide the necessary information. To make the
process easier, I suggest sorting this information into basic categories:
who, what, where, when, why and how --the tried and true way to get
to the bottom of any story. Don't worry that it looks like a jig saw
puzzle with no picture to go by, all the pieces will come together
later.
The
text or copy for your site needs to be well written, clear and concise.
Most people do not like reading large amounts of text on a computer
screen, so try to get your message across with as few words as possible.

WHO
are you? Define your company, services, organization, etc.
How long have you been in business?
Do you want to provide company historical information?
Who are your personnel or staff?
Do you want to provide individual or group information?
WHAT
is the purpose of your site?
What
message do you want to convey?
What do you want to gain by having a web site?
What products or services are you selling?
Will
you have products for sale on your site? How many?
Do you want to include prices, item numbers, size, etc.?
Do you have detailed descriptions of each product?
WHERE
are you located or where can you be reached?
Where
can viewers purchase your products, services etc.?
Do you sell through distributors? Do you want to list them?
Where can viewers find out more information? Do you want to provide
links to sites pertinent to your type of service or topics of similar
interest?
WHEN?
When are you open for business?
When do you take orders?
Do you hold or sponsor special events or sales?
Are they regular monthly events or only occasionally?
Will you have news releases or welcome new personnel on your site?
WHY
should viewers continue to visit your site, buy from you, use your
services or trust the information you provide?
Are
your products, services or information superior in quality?
Have you won awards or been given special recognition?
Do you belong to any professional or trade organizations?
Do you have a courteous, professional staff.
Do you offer something that your competition doesn't.
HOW
will viewers use the information you provide?
Will
they purchase from you? How?
Will they use your services? How?
Do you want viewer feedback? How?
